Saving Mr. Banks - Movie Review

16:14

Saving Mr. Banks is a film about the true story of P. L Travers' and her time spent in California for the pre-production of her novel, Mary Poppins. The film also cuts between the pre-production and Travers' childhood and relationship with her father.

For any fans of Disney and Mary Poppins, this is a delightful film which shows the difficult time spent with Mrs P. L Travers. Although refusing to make Mary Poppins into a film for 20 years, she finally realises she needs to more for money than for herself. The film is well put together, and even though at times seems a little exaggerated you hear at the end a real tape and realise that this lady was actually that difficult to please regarding her film. There is a moment in the film where Walt shows understanding of her fear of selling Mary Poppins, where he says it would have killed him to sell Mickey.

The real great part of the film is the acting. Emma Thompson is absolutely amazing as P. L Travers, and even gets sympathy from the audience when she could have very easily been disliked for her attitude towards everything. I really hope Emma gets nominations for this because she completely blew me away and takes over the film with her personality and charm. Tom Hanks plays Walt Disney fantastically, showing the charisma and sweetness of Walt and yet at the same time the fact that he was a business man who is trying to get his own way for the film. Jason Schwartzman and B.J Novak are wonderful as the Sherman brothers.

The scenes showing Travers' childhood were very well done, with subtle hints as to why she became who she was and the story of Mary Poppins. I personally preferred the modern day scenes as I think most would, but they were definitely needed and very well edited from the changing in eras.

A wonderful film all together, and I would say definitely watch it. I wouldn't say it's my favourite film of the year, but for Emma Thompson was probably my favourite actress of this year. A comical and clever film which you should definitely watch if you like Disney, and will leave you humming the songs over and over again.
